    Mike Berkofsky photo

Don't think he's got the eyes right, not dark enough.

It looks Airbrushed to the max, in fact the eyes just don't look right at all.

Yes, he looks a bit like a waxwork. This isn't the one that appeared in Rave anyway.

The eyebrows, skin, eyes and lips are touched-up. Looks effeminate like Prince.

    Re: Mike Berkofsky photo

I exchanged mails with Mike Berkofsky (really nice guy) and he was delighted when I sent him another photo from the session that ended up in the girl's magazine Jackie. Like the ektachrome he revived, he hadn't seen it since the 60s. Here it is next to his new photo on the cover of Rock & Folk.

He asked my opinion about the photo and I did urge him to do the eyes again. He did try and bring back the bags under Jimi's eyes but not enough. On his site, he had an animation showing the various stages and I managed to capture this shot of the raw image (I circled the bag under the eye to make my point to Mike):

Mike was working on a book about the discovery/enhancing, so maybe the original scan will be featured.
He was in negociation with Janie & Co. for the use of the image on an upcoming release ("People Hell & Angels" most likely) but they didn't offer enough money (they wanted to buy the full rights in fact).

Mike also insisted that the session took place in January and I tried to convince him that it was more like May 67, but he was unshakeable. What do you guys reckon?

That picture, the one with 'Jackie' on, also appeared in Rave, because I have a copy with 'Rave' printed on it.

That's right. Mike said that the shoot was for Rave magazine (same publishing group as Jackie).

I don't know how long it takes to set up a magazine issue, but according to the position of the picture in my scrapbook, it must have come out in June.

It took three years to properly restore it scanning it, fixing tiny bits, then finally turning it back into film. I worked on the contrast and the colour, and even had to graft a bit of "skin" on to his cheekbone where it got stuck on the plastic file. But there's no airbrushing. That would be sacrilege.
No airbrushing! Looks like Jimi is wearing those coloured contact lenses!

Definitely not January, and he totally fucked the photo with photoshop or whatever he used. "A book" about a photo! - is the man mental

Have y'all noticed that the on cover of Both Sides Of The Sky, the photo has been retouched yet again, giving Jimi a straight nose and slightly slanted eyes! Mike told me that these further retouches weren't by him. He only discovered the final image like we did when it started appearing on Amazon etc.
