    11. HIGHWAY CHILE (1)

    HIGHWAY CHILE
    * (1) (ie ‘Child’) [B side of Wind Cries Mary, allegedly mixed into stereo by Kramer,
    just sounds like clearer mono?

Yeah, his guitar slung across his back1-uh
His dusty boots is his Cadillac
uh-Framed in’2 hair just-uh blowin’ in the wind
Ain’t seen a bed in so long it’s a sin
He left home when he was seventeen
The rest of the world he had longed to see-uh
    And everybody knows, boss-uh
A rollin’ sto-one gathers no moss

Now, you’d probably call him a tramp
But it goes a little deeper than that
    He’s a… highway chile. . . yeah

Now, some people say he had a girl back home
Who messed around and did him pretty wrong
They tell me it kind o’ hurt him bad
Kind o’ made him feel pretty sad
I couldn’t say what [he] went through was fine3
Anyway he left the world behind-uh
Well, everybody knows the same old story
And love or war you can’t lose with glory4

    Now, you’d probably-uh call him a tramp but-uh
I know it goes a little deeper than that
    He’s a. . . highway chile
    Walk on brother
    Yeah… whoa… yeah

    [Solo]

Walk her on down the highway

His old guitar slung across his back
His dusty boots is his Cadillac
Framed in hair just a blowin’ in the wind
Ain’t seen a bed in so long it’s a sin
Now, you may call him a tramp
But I know it goes a little deeper than that
    He’s a… highway child
Walk on brother, don’t let no one stop you
    Highway chile, yeah, yeah, yeah
    Highway chile, rollin’ stone
Goin’ on down the highway, go ahead on
    Highway chile, yeah, yeah
    Highway chile, yeah, ooh-ooh
    Ow!

Eddie: Come on in an’ hear it, mate
[only on the extended “stereo” mix from the 4 CD box. This bit of chat has been used on another track, so which recording it comes from initially is anyone’s guess]

    *Jimi?
1‘Melanie’ reminiscing on her Greenwich Village days in the early ‘60’s: “You know people walked around with guitars hanging on their backs. People didn’t have guitar cases; that was just, that was, that would, that was unthinkable. You don’t, you just didn’t have a guitar case. A guitar case was for people who graduated Julliard.”
2‘Flamin’ !?? I think maybe not, if not, it is ‘Framed in’, which in the 2nd chorus it especiallysounds like? But, strongly supporting “flamin’” is — Jimi being Clapton’s only challenger to “GOD” title and admitted fan of and ‘friend’ of his — the 21-01-67 Disc & Music Echo article, “‘ME’, Eric Clapton talks to Mike Ledgerwood”: [...] LIKES: “Hair. I like Dylan’s hair. And Jimi Hendrix. Hair that doesn’t look like hair. Looks more like flames. I also like animals.”
Of course Clapton’s comment was made a good while before Jimi’s lyric was recorded. Jimi was maybe having a sly fun with this, ie playing a ‘double game’, playing with the word, actually saying ‘framed’ in, but slurring it slighly, or vice versa?
Definitely not Eberth’s, “A pavement here,” though!
3When entirely separated, slowed down etc., it still sounds a lot like he’s rushed the vocal here and elided the ‘he’, as in, “...[he] went through was fine,” but it’s possible it’s just a fluffed, “his mind”. But, audibly, definitely not Eberth’s, “through the fire,” which as well as being wrong doesn’t make sense either.
4The ‘t’ in “can’t” isn’t clear. But “can” renders this ludicrous. It is clearly not. Anyway, one of Jimi’s best lyrics.

    HIGHWAY CHILE

Official lyric transcibed by Kathy Eberth, Michael Jeffery’s (New York) assistant, for ‘Bella Godiva’, Jimi’s publishing company. Printed in the ‘War Heroes’ song book.

    (Spoken)
His guitar swung across his back,
His dusty boots, and it’s his Cadillac
A pavement here jus a-blowing in the wind,
Ain’t seen a bed in so long it’s a sin,
He left home when he was seventeen
The rest of the world he longed to see,
And everybody knows, boss, a rolling stone gathers no moss!

Now you probably call him a tramp, but it goes a little deeper than that!
    He’s a, Highway Chile!

Now some people say he had a girl back home
Who messed him around and did him pretty wrong
They tell me it kind of hurt him bad
Kinda made him feel pretty sad.

I couldn’t say what he went through the fire
Anyway, he left the world behind
Well everybody knows the same old story:
Another war you can’t lose in glory.

Now you probably call him a tramp, but it goes a little deeper than that!
    He’s a, Highway Chile!

Does that mean: "I think it is 'raven' hair." Go for it

It means I always have thought it was, but I'm not necessarily right!
